Pipe Schedule Chart: A Comprehensive Guide to Pipe Sizes and Schedules

A pipe schedule chart is a table that lists the specifications for nominal pipe sizes and wall thicknesses in a piping system. The chart is used to determine the appropriate pipe size for a given fluid flow application, based on the desired flow rate, pressure drop, and other design parameters. The pipe schedule chart provides the following information for each size of pipe:

ms pipe, sch40 pipe, erw pipe, Circular Hollow Section
Circular Hollow Section
  • Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)
  • Schedule Number
  • Outside Diameter (OD)
  • Wall Thickness (WT)
  • Inside Diameter (ID)
  • Pipe Weight per Foot (in kg)

Here is a sample pipe schedule chart for nominal pipe sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 5 inches:

Here is a sample pipe schedule chart for nominal pipe sizes ranging from 36 inches to 48 inches:

Nominal Pipe Size Schedule Outside Diameter Wall Thickness Inside Diameter Weight per Foot (lb/ft)
36″ 40 914.0 mm 22.22 mm 864.75 mm 79.26 kg
36″ 80 914.0 mm 35.71 mm 817.75 mm 120.1 kg
42″ 40 1067.0 mm 22.22 mm 1007.75 mm 96.94 kg
42″ 80 1067.0 mm 35.71 mm 955.75 mm 145.9 kg
48″ 40 1219.2 mm 23.83 mm 1152.54 mm 117.61 kg
48″ 80 1219.2 mm 40.49 mm 1092.71 mm 179.19 kg

The schedule number in the chart refers to the wall thickness of the pipe, and it is expressed as a number. The higher the schedule number, the thicker the pipe wall. For example, a pipe with a schedule 80 designation has a thicker wall than a pipe with a schedule 40 designation. The schedule chart also lists the dimensions of the pipe, including the outside diameter and inside diameter, so that the correct fittings can be selected for the application.

It’s important to note that the pipe schedule chart is based on the nominal pipe size, which is not the actual outside diameter of the pipe. The actual outside diameter can be slightly larger or smaller than the nominal size, depending on the manufacturing process and the tolerance allowed.
